Safe and Sound Protocol
The Safe and Sound Protocol is a well-researched program of five hours of specially processed music which is administered in small increments to reduce stress, increase feelings of safety and improve auditory sensitivity. As the client calms the autonomic nervous system, a parasympathetic (rest and digest) activation supports client engagement.
The SSP has three pathways that differ in their desired outcomes and their level of music filtration. Each of these pathways are utilized to promote a calm state with the SSP Core Pathway implementing the greatest filtration of the music for nervous system self-regulation.

SSP Connect
The first pathway is the SSP Connect. The Connect creates awareness of one’s physiological state and sometimes is used as an introduction to the music experience while learning about nervous system regulation. Neurobiological education given within the session aids the client towards understanding the need for parasympathetic regulation for better physical, relational, and mental health. The music used in the SSP Connect Pathway is unfiltered and is essentially the same as music played on the radio. This full spectrum music can start the SSP listening experience while understanding of one’s nervous system state is developed.
SSP Core
The SSP Core implements a dynamically filtered music program that provides the highest level of filtration over the five hours of listening. Core promotes behavioral state regulation, improves auditory processing and social engagement behaviors. The SSP Core is the strongest therapeutic program offered. Many clients experience profound improvement in their sleep, sense of calm, and ability to connect to others.
SSP Balance
The SSP Balance program is lightly filtered music that many clients continue to use after the SSP Core is completed to extend the benefits and promote continued self-regulation. The Balance program’s filtration is consistently filtered at the same level throughout the five hours of listening. Many clients benefit from extending their use of the Safe and Sound Protocol with the SSP Balance to promote long-term parasympathetic regulation.
The Safe and Sound Protocol was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, the developer of the Polyvagal Theory, to assist clients in self-regulation and promote a sense of safety within the body. This sense of safety lays the foundation for a grounded state and improved receptivity toward social engagement. Many clients use the Safe and Sound Protocol with other forms of intervention such as EMDR and Somatic therapy with great success.
